Lower body strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility working together. Known as the "sitting-rising test" in research.
A Brazilian study found that the ability to sit and rise from the floor without support is a significant predictor of all-cause mortality. Each point lost (out of 10) was associated with a 21% increase in mortality risk.
Start standing with feet shoulder-width apart
Lower yourself to sit on the floor in a cross-legged position
Without using your hands, knees, or forearms for support, stand back up
Try to maintain smooth, controlled movement throughout
The full test: sit down and stand up, scoring 5 points each way
Start by practicing the stand-up portion only
Use one hand for balance initially, then progress to no hands
Strengthen your legs with squats and lunges to build the required strength
Allow one hand or knee touch (subtract 1 point each)
Do it with eyes closed, or holding a weight overhead
Be honest with yourself. This is about knowing where you are, not where you think you should be.
