Single Leg Balance

Your nervous system check

Can you stand on one leg for 30 seconds? Balance is neurological—use it or lose it.

Video demonstration coming soon

What this tests

Proprioception, ankle stability, hip strength, and vestibular function. A window into your nervous system health.

Why it matters

Research shows inability to stand on one leg for 10 seconds in middle age is linked to nearly double the risk of death from any cause within 10 years. Balance is a use-it-or-lose-it skill that declines with age if not trained.

How to do it

1

Stand near a wall or chair for safety (but don't touch)

2

Shift your weight to one leg

3

Lift the other foot off the ground, knee bent at 90 degrees

4

Keep your standing leg straight but not locked

5

Hold for 30 seconds, then switch legs

Tips for success

Fix your gaze on a stationary point in front of you

Engage your core—imagine bracing for a light punch

Practice while brushing your teeth or waiting for coffee

Progressions

Make it easier

Keep a fingertip on a wall, or hold for 10 seconds

Make it harder

Close your eyes, or stand on an unstable surface
